2. Cross-Industry Patterns Worth Noting

Six patterns that emerge from the matrix. These directly affect cloud advisory positioning — especially when clients ask "which cloud should we anchor on?"

The Walmart Rule

Retailers refuse AWS on principle. Walmart, Costco, Target, Kroger, Home Depot, Lowe's all skip it — Amazon is the competitor. This is the single largest channel where Azure and GCP win uncontested.

Financials = 3-cloud minimum

JPMorgan, Citi, BofA, Wells Fargo all run on three or four clouds explicitly for concentration risk. Regulators increasingly expect this. Single-cloud financials (Capital One) are now rare exceptions.

Azure owns regulated industries

Healthcare payers, energy majors, and pharma trend Azure-primary. Microsoft's Enterprise Agreements and identity (Entra) make it the default for orgs already deep in M365 — exactly the JCB Azure thesis.

GCP wins through AI

Meta, Snap, Character.AI, Runway all anchor on GCP for Vertex AI + Gemini + TPUs. Q2 CY26 +82% growth reflects this — AI-native companies increasingly default to Google Cloud for training and serving.

OCI shows up in two places

Either Oracle Database legacy (BofA, Citi, Caterpillar) or AI GPU capacity (Nvidia, Meta). Rarely a primary cloud for traditional enterprise workloads outside those two patterns.

Defense pulls all four

DoD JWCC awarded across AWS, Azure, GCP, and Oracle. Boeing, Lockheed, RTX all four-cloud. Defense is the only vertical where zero hyperscalers are excluded — mandated by the JWCC framework.

Methodology: Sourced from public earnings transcripts, vendor press releases, customer reference programs, AWS re:Invent / Microsoft Build / Microsoft Ignite / Google Cloud Next case studies, and CIO interviews. Companies are included only when at least one cloud relationship is publicly documented. Internal cloud spend mix is not directly observable; "Primary / Secondary / Tertiary" classifications reflect best-available industry signal as of August 2026 and may shift as AI workload allocations evolve.
Notable H1 2026 shifts: OpenAI added to AWS as exclusive third-party Frontier provider ($100B/8yr). Meta expanded AWS arrangement. All four hyperscalers accelerating in the same quarter — a first.
